Did you know there are breast pump flange sizes of 10mm – 40mm? With myriads of breast pumps on the market today and the confusing array of breast pump parts, moms may begin to feel overwhelmed with appropriate pumps, flange sizes, and how all these pump accessories interchange!
Hormonal shifts, engorgement, and the physical act of nursing or pumping often causes nipples to enlarge, stretch, and sometimes shrink as your milk supply comes in and stabilizes. Baby may be nursing beautifully in the hospital with what looks to be a great latch, but soon after birth, nursing and pumping may not be so comfortable when you are home and your milk comes in. It may seem as though you are starting all over again for baby to achieve a good latch and to achieve comfort in pumping.
If you are pumping, your nipple size may fluctuate. If you experience pain or a drop in milk output, it is highly recommended to be remeasured to ensure you are using the correct flange size.
Our IBCLC, Deby Wells, offers in-office flange fitting consults. She will help you determine the best flange size for you. Because the nipple does change sizes during feeding and/or pumping, using a plastic measuring tool doesn’t always give the correct size, but Deby can help you determine the correct flange size to help you transition to successful pumping.
